Happy Halloween

Well, here we are October 31st.

Halloween is a month long celebration.  Seeing the decorations go up and the costume supplies in stores.  Reading all the themed blogs and countdowns. Shopping and plotting for a costume for weeks, only to toss together something last minute. Watching the leaves change from green or orange to non-existent.  Doing our best to make it to all the spooky gatherings the weekends prior.

This year, thanks to my fantastic girlfriend Kelsey, in addition to all of our usual seasonal fun, I had two Halloween experiences I've always wanted to try.  This month she took me apple picking for the first time, and just this past weekend, we went to our first midnight screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I've had a great Halloween season, and I look forward to tonight.  Seeing the trick or treaters running around the neighborhood and taking a long walk to check out everyone’s jack o lanterns and decorations.

I can’t wait to get comfortable and snack on some toasted pumpkin seeds and cider tonight as we watch The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.

I only posted about half as much as I intended for this, my first countdown.  Not for lack of material, I have plenty (some will carry over into Nov, like my AEIOU Great Pumpkin gift exchange report, I cleaned up), but lack of time.  Fall is my favorite season, and I do not regret that I didn't spend more of it in front of a computer screen.

Happy Halloween everyone, I hope you all had a great season.

Halloween Countdown: Family Portrait

Here are some of the ghosts I've attracted to the Random Stuff this season and a few that happened to be convenient.

Halloween Countdown: Looks Like I'm Collecting Ghosts Now

This fellow showed up on my desk at work yesterday.  He makes the third new classic white ghost that made it's way into my collection this year.

Obligatory group photo coming soon.

Halloween Countdown: Weekend Purchase

Had a stellar weekend doing fall stuff, pickin' apples and taking in the foliage. A stop at an antique co-op in the middle of nowhere yielded this gem.

I can't get enough of that warm orange glow.

Halloween Countdown: HexBug Mutant Zombie

This was a total impulse buy and a super pleasant surprise.  I've seen these things around for a few years but never pulled the trigger.  Then I saw this orange and black glow in the dark beauty and there was no question I would soon be separated from my $5.

Everything about this is Halloween. The package art and the description "Mutant Zombie Motorized Bug Straight From the Grave" are spot on.  Nine year old Ron would have lost his mind over this thing.

The coffin has nice little rests for the bug to sit in, holding him nicely in the position you see.  Very secure and solid feeling.

Time to get him outta that coffin.  This is my first HexBug, and I'm surprised by the rubberyness of the legs.  It really feels kinda buggy.

In motion the random, vibrating movement is very insect like.  I am amazed by how much fun this simple little thing is.

Then the lights go off, this thing is pretty creepy.

Even more so in motion.

I'd love to see an army of these unleashed in a dark room.  The random movements are very bug like and a bunch of them bumping into one another would create excellent Halloween ambiance.

Halloween Countdown Day ???: Halloween Pez

Alright, this clearly is not going to be a daily thing. Let's not call it a countdown. We'll just maintain a Halloween theme here this month amid the randomness.

Today I'll share some of my Halloween themed Pez brand candy dispensers:

These two are some of my oldest.  I feel like that Jack-O-Lantern was the standard for half my life.

We've seen a lot of new designs in the last decade, not all great.

This guy always reminded me of Eddie Munster.

Another witch.

Witch evolution.

There was at least one new design this year that I've yet to photograph.  A random, apple shaped Jack-O-Lantern.  I'll try to get a pic of that along with some of my other recent Halloween scores up very soon.

Halloween Countdown Day 7: What's in the bag?

Hey gang, so ummm, yea . . .   day 6 didn't happen.

I thought we got the weekend off from the countdown?

I was trying to build extra suspense for my Friday cliffhanger?

The bags released some sort off gas that put me in a 48 hour coma?

Whatever the reason, let's get this countdown back on track.

When I bought these, I had visions of tiny plastic Frankensteins and Wolfmen, the reality:

Dumpy dumpy

First the candy, mmmm 40 year old "Sourlets", that coma scenario may not have been that far off.

These aren't the monsters I had in mind. Still menacing though.

This must be the "Super Toy"

One emergency vehicle "Super Toy" in each bag.  I guess someone's gotta clean up after the dinosaur attacks.

These guys are pretty menacing.

Overall, not the monsters I imagined, but still a pretty fun haul.

Halloween Countdown Day 5: Horror Monsters Grab Bags

I recently got me one of those fancy new smart phones for the first time.  I find myself monkeying with it while watching Toy Hunter. I'm having fun, getting and learning new apps when Toy Hunter inspired me to download the eBay app and before I knew it this was staring at me.

Wow! Sealed vintage monsters grab bags!  Look at that artwork, I had to see what was in those bags, they must be filled with vintage monster goodness.  Two monsters, a super toy AND candy! How could I go wrong, the price was right, I bought two.

They arrived super fast, and before I even open them, I am thrilled with my purchase.  They are amazing, the colors, the illustrations, the feel of the paper.  These make me sad Grab Zags didn't get the Halloween bags out this year.

Tomorrow I'll open 'em up!

Halloween Countdown Day 4: Monster Jiggly Wobbly Guys

Not sure if these wiggly wobbly figures have an official name, but they were a dollar store staple for a few years and I think they're great.  Sadly, I don't see them as much anymore.

Sorry for the photo dump, I'm a bit under the weather.  I've got some good stuff in the pipeline.

Halloween Countdown Day 3: Universal Monsters Beanies

About a decade ago CVS had some cool exclusive stuff to get you in the store once in awhile.  I seem to recall some Rudolf stuff for Christmas for a few years.  I didn't pay that much attention.  One Halloween season though, they got my attention.

At the height of the Beanie Baby craze, everyone was releasing their own Beanie characters.  CVS had the Universal Monsters.  The terrifying monsters of your nightmares, now made soft and friendly!  These guys are great, their faces remind me of grumpy Muppets

There were more, a Dracula, a Werewolf, a Hunchback and the Phantom of the Opera.  They're still cheap on eBay, perhaps someday I'll have to round out the set.

Halloween Countdown Day 2: Vintage Plastic Pumpkin

A few summers back I was walking round the neighborhood during the height of garage sale season.  I was just minding my own business when I caught a glint of plastic pumpkin orange out of the corner of my eye.  I strolled over to the table and saw this beauty amid some Christmas stuff.  I kept my cool, made a bit of small talk with the proprietor of the sale.  A few minutes and a quarter later and he was mine!

He just beams Halloween happiness!

I think he is awesome, and will now take his rightful place as the face of the Random Stuff for the duration of the month.

All hail pumpkin hat guy!

Halloween Countdown Day 1: Lego Monster Fighters Ghost

I've been wanting to do this for a few years now, today begins the Random Stuff Halloween Countdown.  Each day this month I'm going to try to feature a different spooky treat . . . or at least I'm going to try.  I'm sorry, I'm just not a dependable blogger.  I'm new, but there are tons of pros spooking up the web, check out http://www.countdowntohalloween.com/ for ton's more quality Halloween countdowns.

I'm starting with this guy.We made a quick stop into Target last month for board games and snacks, and I had to perform my check of the seasonal section, as is mandatory anytime after Labor Day.  I don't think I have to tell anyone reading this how amazing Target becomes this time of year, volumes have already been written about it's bounty of Halloween joy.  We were kinda in a hurry so I took a quick look.  The last remnants of "back to school" clung to the shelves and the Halloween stuff was just barely starting to creep out.  I took a quick scan of the movies and candy that already made it's way out and then a look at the back end cap.  Huzzah, some of the toys and novelties were already out, including this beauty.

I have been picking up these Monster Fighter sets here and there, as well as the spookier and nerdier mini figures from the blind bags.  So this $4 set was a no brainer.

A glow in the dark ghost mini figure is worth the price of admission, any spooky accessories are a bonus.

I got this set together quick enough, but I'm left a bit disappointed by the clock, not so monstery.

Mmm . . . Pendulum. Or fly swatter?

Clock aside, the glow in the dark ghost rocks my socks off.

He makes a great companion to my Playmobil ghost.

Maybe the ghost can creep up the clock a little bit.

Ahhh, there we go! Yup much scarier.
