A look ahead

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2012, I want to make a little record of what I expect of myself collecting wise heading into the new year.

Not so much for public record, but for my own benefit.  I've found posting to this blog to be a nice reference.  It's useful to look back and see what I was excited about adding to the pile of random stuff and how I feel about it now.

Moving forward, I want to try to get away from blind bagged mini figures.  They're fun and it's exciting to see what may be lurking in that tiny box or little silvery bag, but I want to focus my limited collecting resources in other directions.

Watching Toy Hunter and reading other folks blogs has reminded me how much I love vintage stuff and I'd like to work towards filling some holes in my collection.  So I'll be on the look out for more random 80's stuff.

I'd like to try to score some nice complete vintage Star Wars figures this year.  I have no aspirations of getting a complete set, I'd just like to replace some of my favorites from childhood.  I'd also like to recreate this scene:

I recently found the parts of the play set I was missing, and now I'd like to populate it as seen on the box.

I assume we'll see some cool new stuff to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Masters of the Universe.  I know Funko is releasing some nice looking POP! figures and Wacky Wobblers so I'll more than likely grab some of those.

Movies always spur a slew of cool new randomness.

The new GI Joe movie finally opens in a few months.  I already grabbed a new Cobra Commander, I'm sure I'll pick up a few more of those figures and things.

A new Iron Man and another Thor movie this year will see the release of some new figures, so that will happen.  Although I can't imagine I'll be buying another Iron Man, how many do you really need?

I'm looking forward to Oz: The Great And Powerful, not sure if it will spawn any worthwhile merch.

New Star Trek this year.  The Star Trek Kre-O have my attention, we'll see what else Hasbro does with the license.

Pacific Rim looks awesome, I'll be pretty bummed if I can't get my hands on the monsters and robots from that Guillermo del Toro epic

Very excited about Monsters University, so I know I'll have some more Monster lurking about this spring.

New Superman movie, meh, we'll see.

Disney is releasing their Depp heavy take on Lone Ranger. So that may make for some fun figure fodder.

Beyond movie stuff, we'll see what pops up.

I still get all drooly over the prospect of those Super7 3¾ Alien figures, if they're not outrageously priced, I'm in.

I thought Jakks was going to do other themes for there S.L.U.G. line. I seem to recall aliens or something else in the works.  The zombies have been fun, but I'm ready for something more.

I'm sure the news out of the various comic cons and fan celebrations will see me adding to this list.

So what's everybody looking forward to in 2013? Anything else that should be on my radar next year?

EDIT: just saw these 2013 must haves listed on a Funko fan message board:

Monsters University
     Sulley
     Mike
     Randall

Batman 66 TV Series
     Batman (adam west)
     Joker (caesar romero)
     Catwoman(julie newmar)
     Robin (burt ward)

Planet of the Apes Classic

Got myself one of them 2600's

I first came across this beaut while we were in the grocery store.  I'm not one for the pricier Hot Wheels, but this one was worth the extra couple of bucks.

The wood panel and colors are so perfect. This looks so much like the console I spent so, so many hours with as a kid; I can't stand it.  The only way this could have been improved was to somehow work in the orange button of the joystick.

Beyond that, I really love this van and would like to live in it, or at least drive it to the local arcade.

There are six in the line, the Missile Command one is kinda cool, the Pong car looks like a Cheetos delivery wagon, of all the Hot Wheels Atari cars, this is clearly the one to get.

Post Christmas Pre-New Year Update

I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas, I most definitely did.

Before I recap my holiday haul, get into my year end re-cap or my 2013 look ahead, I still need to reveal my Dork Horde Secret Santa gifty.

I meant to do this days ago, but real life and Christmas prep got in the way.

So without further delay I present the contents of that sweet monster covered present.

This damsel in distress figure came packed with an awesome Creature from the Black Lagoon.   With the addition of this Creature and the one Jboy sent me, I am compiling quite a Creature army.  Thank you again to my Secret Santa.

I'll get them all together for a family photo soon.  Hopefully I'll also do a little look back at 2012 collecting wise, a look ahead to 2013 and of course, a Christmas haul report . . .

. . . featuring this guy

hello

Dork Horde Secret Santa Part 1

Yesterday was not a great day for me, work was busy and I had a last minute shopping meltdown in Walgreens ::sigh::

It couldn't have better a better day for my girlfriend to exclaim, "hey! you got a package" upon our arrival home.

I recognized the name from the return address and knew immediately who it was from and got very excited.

I'm not sure what the rules are for this Secret Santa or if I'm supposed to disclose their name, so I'll keep it under my hat for now.

I am not waiting until Christmas to open this baby up and was glad I didn't.  I was greeted with an array of geeky holiday goodness upon opening the box.

Let's see, a couple varieties of Christmas Peeps (nice), some light up Christmas light button things (cool), a clever Mario Bros. themed Christmas card (awesome), and a gift.  Not just any gift though, a gift wrapped in some of the coolest paper I've ever seen.

Aghhh! Universal Monsters wrapping paper.  Four of feature films most fearsome fiends making merry!  I love it.

Just look at these guys!

Dracula looking down at something, I think he's outraged Frankie stole his idea to wear a Santa Hat

Frankenstein's Monster looking festive and gay in his own hat.

The Wolfman also wears his hat well, but is clearly up to no good.  I'm reminded of when the Grinch wore a Santa suit to steal Christmas.  I'm watching you Wolfman.

Finally the Mummy, in not only a Santa Hat, but he went all out with the beard too.  A+ for effort.

I am not one to save wrapping paper.  Once I have shredded it to reveal it's secrets, into the trash it goes.  Not this time.  I will be saving as much of this as possible and adding it to the archives.

What was in this amazingly wrapped gift you ask?  See you tomorrow for the big reveal.

My 2012 Action Figure Nativity Contest Entry

Again this year Reis over at Lair of the Dark Horde is hosting an Action Figure Nativity Contest.  This is my second year in the action figure nativity building business, and as you can see, I haven't really honed my skills much since last year.
(Full disclosure, I did wait until I was a couple of beers into the football game on Sunday to start this project.)

For a few days leading up to the deadline, we shopped around for a cheap, serviceable manger, but as you can see by this marvelous corrugated cardboard box; we did not succeed.

This year the cast of my Nativity includes:

Linus as Joseph
Miss Piggy as Mary
A California Rasin, Brer Rabit and Henry Jones, Sr. as the three wise men
A B'omarr Monk, Jerry the Mouse and a creepy Uncle Fester as stable animals and well wishers
Pleakley is trying to get a pic with Jesus with his phone
Soaron from Captain Power plays an Angel
and Nibbler from Futurama stars as Jesus

So, all you Futurama, California Raisin, Captain Power, Animated Addams Family fans, if you like what you see, vote for me here.

Mini Figure Fun

Here's my final post about the goodies Jboypacman sent my way, and there's still a few great items I haven't covered.

Look at this fun bunch of Lego Mini Figures.  Including the awesome clockwork robot who has been on my want list since he came out.  Great to finally add this guy to my Mini Fig collection.

Wait a minute, who's that creeping into the photo?

Poor Kre-O Optimus, left out of the mini fig party, just cause he's not a Lego.

Don't feel left out, you're robot pal here will stick by your side.

Everything so generously sent my way will be given a good home here among the randomness.  A final thank you to Jboypacman for the super awesome generous box of awesome.  Up next, my action figure nativity!

Monster fun from Jboy

Continuing to unveil the contents of the box of awesome jboypacman sent my way, I present some spooky additions to the randomness.  I am very excited to add these fast food premium monsters to my monster collection.  If I remember right, these came from Jack in the Box, something we don't have in these parts.

And if these guys aren't scary enough for you, feast your eyes on this dastardly trio and try to get a good nights sleep.

I've bought a few of the Playmobil blind packs, with mixed luck, so I'm very excited to finally have these three from my wishlist.

Thanks again to Jboy for the gifts, and believe it or not, there's still more.

Holiday Cheer Courtesy of Jboypacman

Well, I am officially in the Christmas spirit.  Lego Santa safely made his journey, I had a great time at a friends Christmas party this weekend, I’m 80% done with my Christmas shopping and the tree is up.

Two weeks from Christmas and I received an early present, actually many presents.  Last week our friend Jboypacman over at Revenge From The Cosmic Ark alerted me to a package he sent my way.  In all the craziness of Christmas shopping and holiday parties, I had forgotten all about it.  After a long Monday back to work, I was greeted at home with a package, a box of awesome.

I'm going to go through some of the goodies this week, starting with one of my favorite pieces from the haul.  Robo-Force SOTA!

I had commented on Jboys post about this guy a week or two back and my childhood love of Robo Force and I'm thrilled to have him join the ranks here among the randomness.

As is my childhood original Robo Force figure ENEMY.

"Welcome aboard"

"Zoinks! A m-m-m-monster!"
This guy is super fun. I love the little radar screen that pops out of his head.  Raising the screen makes him look scared, perhaps by a monster.  Tomorrow we'll take a look see what spooked 'ol SOTA.

Thanks again Jboy!

Christmas is coming in only 3 weeks

Christmas is coming  but I'm just not feeling it yet.

I even scored this great Lego Mini Fig Santa and even he hasn't gotten me in the mood.

In an effort to get myself in a more Christmas frame of mind, I'd like to send one of these Lego Santa's off to a fellow blogger.

If anyone would like this guy, leave a comment and he's yours.

New Vending Machine Obsession

For only a quarter of a dollar each these guys are a steal. The sculpts are great.  They look very vintage.

We are truly in a golden age of vending machine toys my friends.

I eagerly await 2015

I'll be turning 40 that year, so I don't want to rush it too much.  I sure am excited by the possibilities though.

AEIOU . . . and Sometimes Why Great Pumpkin Exchange Haul

Halloween is over.  The decoration have come down.  The Jack-O-Lanterns are getting pruney and sunken.  I have been suffering a bit of post Holiday malaise the last few days.  Sure Christmas is coming, but another October is history.  Happily, I can raise my spirits and immerse myself in Halloween anytime amid the randomness.  Adding to the spookyness of my collection is the package I received from my Great Pumpkin.  He went above and beyond, I'm really digging the goodies packed within.

I won't be able to do justice to all the Halloween fun that was packed within, but here are a few of the more notable inclusions.

Zombie Fluxx card game.  At first I was not that interested in Zombie Fluxx, I had never heard of original Fluxx and was a bit hesitant to give it a go.  Kelsey and I sat down to figure it out and despite my initial hesitance, we really started to get into it.  We've played a few games and will definitely add it to our game rotation.

This random tiny Zombie soldier dude is super small, but highly detailed.

Some odd little guys.

These trees are from Kinder eggs.  They are good fun cartoony spooky.  Man, I wish we could have Kinder eggs in the states, we are missing so much good stuff.

Saving the best stuff for the end brings us to this awesome Playmobil devil.

The note my Great Pumpkin included said he was originally purchased in Germany eight or nine years ago.  He arrived sealed, but I couldn't leave him in the box.  I will save the package for it's uniqueness to my collection, but this little devil will take his place on a shelf amid the randomness.

Finally, I come to these.  Original art.  I have to be honest, I'm not sure who was zombified in the illustration on the left, but I definitely recognize Buzz Lightyear.  Clearly he's done something terrible to Woody.

I am very impressed with variety of undead I got in box of spookiness, I hope the recipient of the package I sent had as much fun.

Thanks again to both my Great Pumpkin and to Dex at AEIOU . . . and Sometimes Why for administering the exchange, I'm sure it was no easy task.

Happy Halloween

Well, here we are October 31st.

Halloween is a month long celebration.  Seeing the decorations go up and the costume supplies in stores.  Reading all the themed blogs and countdowns. Shopping and plotting for a costume for weeks, only to toss together something last minute. Watching the leaves change from green or orange to non-existent.  Doing our best to make it to all the spooky gatherings the weekends prior.

This year, thanks to my fantastic girlfriend Kelsey, in addition to all of our usual seasonal fun, I had two Halloween experiences I've always wanted to try.  This month she took me apple picking for the first time, and just this past weekend, we went to our first midnight screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I've had a great Halloween season, and I look forward to tonight.  Seeing the trick or treaters running around the neighborhood and taking a long walk to check out everyone’s jack o lanterns and decorations.

I can’t wait to get comfortable and snack on some toasted pumpkin seeds and cider tonight as we watch The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.

I only posted about half as much as I intended for this, my first countdown.  Not for lack of material, I have plenty (some will carry over into Nov, like my AEIOU Great Pumpkin gift exchange report, I cleaned up), but lack of time.  Fall is my favorite season, and I do not regret that I didn't spend more of it in front of a computer screen.

Happy Halloween everyone, I hope you all had a great season.

Halloween Countdown: Family Portrait

Here are some of the ghosts I've attracted to the Random Stuff this season and a few that happened to be convenient.
